- Assist on projects involving culturing of fungi, DNA isolation from fungal tissue samples, PCR, and gel electrophoresis with the goal of identifying beneficial fungal species in soil that promote crop resiliency.- Soil samples are diluted in water and fungi are grown on Potato-Dextrose-Agar (PDA) plates supplemented with the ampicillin antibiotic. Individual fungal colonies from these plates are cultured as an individual colony on a new plate. Plugs of each individual colony were archived for long-term storage. Archived fungal colonies are grown in PD-broth at 30° C for DNA extractions. DNA extraction is performed using a homemade kit based on the Qiagen PureGene method. The DNA is used as a template to PCR-amplify the ITS gene and the PCR product is submitted for Sanger sequencing. The ITS gene sequence is used to identify different fungal species from soil samples collected from wheat plants.- Pipetting skills, google drive proficiency, and tube labeling are used to maintain organization in the lab.- Conducting analysis in bioinformatics within the Galaxy and Globus systems. Work involves demultiplexing indices and pairing the forward and reverse reads for further processing by variant discovery.

- Assisted with various mosquito colony maintenance. Eggs were hatched in trays of water and taken care of through the stages of development. Pupae were fed with fish food and mature adults were fed with bovine blood in petri dishes. - Helped on a project involving tracking mosquito species in the RDU area by setting two different traps in areas around Raleigh.- Learned how to identify mosquito and tick species with the use of a microscope.
