About Olajumoke Oladele
OVERVIEW - I am a chemistry PhD candidate whose doctoral research goal is to synthesize environmentally benign base metal homogeneous catalysts. These Lewis acid deep eutectic solvent catalysts find process-relevant applications in the industrially important dehydration of alcohols, and their tuned selectivity helps to produce their corresponding unsymmetrical ethers and alkenes. The ethers and alkenes are highly sought in the fine chemicals or pharmaceutical industry. INSTRUMENTATION SKILLS - To execute my research goals, I employ instrumental techniques like nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR, 31P NMR, 13C NMR), gas chromatography--mass spectrometry (GC-MS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), infrared spectroscopy (IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for sample and product analysis, in addition to routine data analysis enabled by proprietary software and Microsoft software suite.MENTORING & SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION - Through this project, I mentored an high school student who won first-place at a local poster competition and has now been accepted to the Cornell University Chemical Engineering program. Also, I regularly present the findings of my work at relevant venues, including at the American Chemical Society (ACS) national conference.WORTH NOTING - Prior to Graduate School, I interned in the Quality Assurance laboratory of 7Up Bottling Company, Lagos, Nigeria as well as at Tropical Naturals Soap Company, Lagos, Nigeria. This 18-month combined experience has helped me become familiar with day-to-day running of the chemical industry.IN CLOSING - Beyond research engagements, my commitment to fostering inclusivity in my community has led me to serve (and be recognized) in multiple student organizations. I have recently concluded my (concurrent) tenure as the Vice-President of the American Chemical Society - Graduate Student Association (ACS-GSO) and the Nigerian Graduate Student Association (NGSA). My Chemistry graduate student colleagues have also elected for me to serve as Treasurer in the 2024/25 academic session.
