    What's most important you ask? My team! The more I focus on helping my team succeed the greater my results. The opposite is also true; the less I focus on helping my team succeed, the poorer my results. This means that my focus is to leverage the strengths of the team and each individual person. I have to think strategically and strive to understand each person on the team. Too many people move into a management role thinking they must lead every person the way they would want to be led. In reality nothing can be farther from the truth. In my opinion great managers know each person on their team is different, and therefore manage accordingly to each person’s unique needs and opportunities. A manager should always be diligent about price integrity. What this means is that the leader himself needs to believe in the price, protect profit and not allow habitual discounting among the team. As a manager I listen; the role of managers has changed. It’s no longer about being taskmaster; it’s about enablement and support. Hierarchical, prescriptive management is dead! I don’t try to control everything. I rather do my best to communicate a vision; let people try to figure out how they are going to get there on their own. I continually remind myself that my time is no longer solely mine; my job is not to protect it, but rather to give it away to those under my care. Several times a day, ask myself, “How should I be investing my time to help my team achieve their goals?” It’s a necessity required to succeed.
