Embedded Software Engineer
Senior Software Engineer R&D
At Kongsberg I was a part of the team that develops the inertial navigation system on the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) called Hugin. This involves writing C++ code for both the real-time navigation system as well as the post-processing tools. Projects included improving navigation robustness in worst-case scenario situations, integrating new sensors, and developing new sensor calibration tools.
Senior Engineer
In September 2021, I received a new title that is more fitting to my role at FarGen. During these past years I have had full responsibility of processing the sequencing data coming out of FarGen's lab. I have also been the primus motor in developing our own HPC environment, the FarGen Cluster.
Phd Candidate
Continuing my work at the Genetic Biobank, I started my PhD studies in October 2018. In October of 2021 I decided to discontinue my PhD studies. During this time I took 26 ECTS worth of PhD courses. I also taught a PhD course in statistics in R, where I created the whole course from scratch (https://olavurmortensen.github.io/r-for-statistics/). I practiced my duty to communicate science to both laymen and professionals, both abroad and at home.
Bioinformatician
At the Genetic Biobank, my primary responsibility was to analyze next-generation sequencing data from the FarGen project.I compared data quality from two DNA extraction methods, from whole-blood and dry-blood spots. This resulted in a scientific paper, of which I am first author of, that was published in the European Journal of Human Genetics in February of 2019 (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41431-019-0343-3).Bringing experience with programming, statistics, and data analysis to the… Show more At the Genetic Biobank, my primary responsibility was to analyze next-generation sequencing data from the FarGen project.I compared data quality from two DNA extraction methods, from whole-blood and dry-blood spots. Genealogical data is valuable in genetics, but lacking the right expertise this resource had not been fully utilized. My knowledge about high-performance computing was useful when we received some funding for a medium-scale computing cluster. I was able to advise what kind of hardware provided the relevant computational resources, and how the software infrastructure should be set up to best suit our needs. Show less

This was an interdisciplinary project, focusing on the theory of inference as well as scalability and user-friendliness. I wrote a tutorial for the software that was well received by the community. Student Assistant
I worked on a project for FractureCode Corporation with another student. Together, we explored the possibilities of using big data technologies (Apache Spark) to analyze the large amounts of data that their customers produce.
Teaching Assistant
I assisted in the group work sessions in two terms of a course, teaching first year engineering students introductory programming in MatLab. I also graded reports in this course, which served as the students’ exams.
