Profile bio

About Oleuanna Twig

I am dedicated to tackling the extreme poverty affecting an estimated 35 percent of Sub-Saharan Africans. My focus on food security and poverty reduction has been shaped by my early experiences as a social worker, where I witnessed the harrowing impacts of starvation while supporting refugees. These experiences deepened my understanding of the systemic barriers that sustain poverty and strengthened my resolve to advocate for transformative and sustainable change. My goals include reforming laws, improving food access, advancing agricultural practices, and promoting environmental sustainability. One of my key objectives is to analyse the investment potential in agriculture and research to improve food production and resilience to climate change. In my role at the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), I support the Anti-Racism Working Group, advancing anti-racist initiatives that align with my commitment to decolonising aid and addressing intersectional inequities. I focus on promoting inclusion, challenging endemic barriers, and fostering a culture of equity and accountability within IPPF.Guided by decolonial and post-development research, I advocate for shifting from donor-led models to locally driven approaches that prioritise community autonomy and local knowledge. My work emphasises empowering women in rural food production as central to sustainable development.Integrating indigenous knowledge with social safety nets, such as food assistance programmes, enhances adaptability and has the potential to protect communities from hunger, especially in crises. This approach fosters equity, sustainability, and culturally appropriate solutions to food insecurity. My career in international development has included collaboration with organisations tackling diverse challenges, such as gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health rights, and poverty alleviation. Many of these interventions supported displaced individuals, whose vulnerabilities are often exacerbated by conflict and migration.I am committed to transforming the global humanitarian system by promoting equitable funding distribution and decolonising aid structures. This involves engaging directly with affected communities to prioritise their needs and autonomy, while addressing conflict actors who exploit hunger as a weapon of war. By reimagining power dynamics within humanitarian responses, we can create sustainable, locally driven solutions that challenge colonial development.
