Open Books is an award-winning nonprofit social venture that operates an extraordinary bookstore, provides community programs, and mobilizes passionate volunteers to promote literacy in Chicago and beyond.I was honored to be August Vol-Star! http://openbooksorg.tumblr.com/post/57526081398/augusts-vol-star-is-the-inimitable-olga-ivanidi-Open Books Buddies: a weekly program where I work one-on-one with elementary students to help boost reading skills such as fluency and comprehension. -Adventures In Creative Writing Field Trips: 2-hour experiences where 3rd-12th graders develop their writing skills in meaningful and creative ways. -July 2013 Publishing Academy: During four weeks in July aspiring teen writers from around Chicago took part in this program. They wrote their own fantasy novels which were published by Open Books in September 2013. My role as one of the writing coaches was to help the students develop their fantasy world and characters, structure the story, brainstorm ideas, participate in different writing exercises together. A big part of my responsibilities was editing and proofreading of the students' works.-Fall 2013 ReadThenWrite Program: During two months students read high-quality literature and then write their personal narratives based on the literature with an oversight from the writing coaches.
