Building out a GCP-based data function to enable both analytical and operational use cases. Data sources are mostly event-based, but there are also some traditional transactional databases and other sources. The main focus is on automation and enabling our team to have an impact larger than its size would normally allow, and to avoid us becoming a bottleneck for unlocking new capabilities. Hence we build tooling, frameworks, and automations which makes contributing to the data stack easier without extensive experience with the data stack.Additional priorities are in data quality monitoring and alerting, involving new custom testing in dbt, Great Expectations, and through developing an in-house anomaly detection framework.

Continuing to improve the quality and consumption of data at RVU, with a greater focus on cross-team initiatives, building infrastructure, and recruitment and training.Interviewed and recruited five new data engineers. For three of them, I was the primary contact during their onboarding and probation periods, which included responsibilities for managing HR requirements, creating stakeholder relationships, designing probation plans, and evaluating performance throughout.Designed and implemented novel tooling for monitoring and alerting data quality SLIs using BiqQuery metadata, Monte Carlo's graphQL API, Opsgenie, and Slack. This led to a dramatic improvement in data quality and trust - we are still gathering data for a proper evaluation, but current figures show an improvement in mean time to resolution of incidents of up to 80%. My colleagues and I presented the work on monitoring and alerting at Fivetran's Modern Data Stack Conference and Monte Carlo's Impact Data Observability Summit. Also responsible for quarterly reviews of objectives and roadmap with general managers.Implemented a new pricing model for our GCP estate resulting in an overall reduction of operational expenses of 50% annually while maintaining same or similar performance for 95% of query jobs.

Improving the quality and consumption of data at RVU, either directly through involvement in data infrastructure projects or indirectly by organising discussions and collaborating with functions across the business.Developed an internal tool for managing dbt documentation snippets that improved discoverability and standardisation of definitions across the organisation. This was showcased at a dbt community meeting to an audience of ~200.Created new functionality in dbt to improve local development experience through directly connecting to production data sources. Similar functionality was later implemented by dbt itself in its `--defer` feature.Designed a North Star vision for data architecture relating to on-site and affiliate performance tracking, with the goal of reducing maintenance requirements, enabling future iterative and modular development, and minimising cost through reduced complexity.Competed in and won a Google-sponsored Kaggle hackathon focused on predicting sales using ecommerce data in BigQuery ML.Designed new structure for organising dbt code that improved compile times by 10x, allowed greater flexibility in scheduling jobs, and reduced the number of failure points in the data stack.
