About Oli Dreike

I am a responsible tourism professional with two decades of experience working in the safari industry. With an MSc in Conservation & Tourism and a BSc in Zoology - I have worked in a diverse range of field-based management positions for both the private and NGO sectors, in East, Southern and Central Africa, for some of the continent's leading safari and conservation organisations. With a passion for the natural world, sustainable development and responsible tourism, I have previously worked in Kenya, Botswana, Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and the Republic of Congo; as a guide, staff trainer, lodge and camp manager, operations manager, Discovery Centre manager and tourism development manager. I also set up and run a small charity which has sponsored the education of over 70 students in Africa and am a keen wildlife photographer.

I also oversee all TSC’s sustainability initiatives; including carbon emission reduction and off-setting, waste management, recycling, food and menus, suppliers and staff training.

    I was responsible for coordinating tourism development activity in and around Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park (NNNP), Republic of Congo. As part of their Park Management Unit, I helped develop and implementing the Park's tourism strategy; with a focus on the day-to-day management of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS) - one of the World's leading conservation non-governmental organizations - tourism development activities under a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) grant. I oversaw the implementation of this Environmental Partnerships Program on the ground, with the aim of creating the enabling conditions for NNNP to become a world-class tourism destination, working closely in partnership with the Congo Conservation Company, local communities and other stakeholders on developing concession and operations agreements for the construction of two new lodges.

    I ran Mwiba Lodge; leading a team of over 80 Tanzanians at one of the country’s top safari lodges on a private wildlife ranch neighbouring the Serengeti. I was responsible for the day-to-day running of this beautiful, ten room luxury tented lodge. I oversaw all aspects of the Lodge’s operation; the management and training of employees, budgets, procurement, construction, maintenance, as well as ensuring guest satisfaction and that service delivery was to the highest standard. I also worked with the ranch management and the Friedkin Conservation Fund to ensure that the tourism side of the operation was in line with their conservation and philanthropic objectives.

    I created, curated and ran the Discovery Centre at Four Seasons Safari Lodge; an interactive, multi-media conservation education centre that allowed guests and visitors the chance to gain a greater insight into the Serengeti’s wildlife, people and history and to learn more about the work of it’s researchers and conservation organisations; for this I worked closely with local government and non-governmental organisations. I was responsible for its day-to day operation, budgets, planning, and leading a local team of seven. I also oversaw the Lodge’s kid’s club and gift shop (which promoted local social enterprises), as well as helped train and mentor employees and led walking safaris. I sat on the Lodges’ senior management team (Planning Committee), oversaw its Discovery Centre Fund (funding and supporting conservation and community projects), chaired the Lodge’s ‘Green Committee’ and oversaw the Lodge’s sustainability initiatives - leading to its certification by Responsible Tourism Tanzania (RTTZ)

    For seven seasons (six to nine months each) I managed exclusive bush camps for the largest safari operator in the Luangwa - with six camps and one safari lodge, catering for a total of over 80 guests, in a remote part of Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. I was responsible for the overall, day-to-day running of all six of their bushcamps, hosting guests, managing local staff, quality control, menu planning, ordering supplies, controlling stock, transferring and guiding guests. Over the years I assumed a position of greater responsibility and a more senior managerial role, becoming responsible for budgeting, implementing systems, overseeing camp construction, website and online marketing and training of new mangers and local staff. I also helped co-ordinate their conservation & community projects.

    On a freelance basis, I took on a variety of roles and projects for this pioneering gorilla tourism company, which runs four upmarket eco-lodges in Uganda and Rwanda. Between 2005 to 2008 I worked in their sales and marketing office in London, assisting with admin, sales and the redesign of their website. Then for seasonal periods from 2009 to 2012 I moved between their lodges, training local staff, reviewing systems and developing community and conservation based activities.
