In my current role I travel with the Mercedes race team following the F1 calendar, primarily looking to extract the maximum performance from the package that we have available for a given weekend. My focus is on the tyres, for which I owe a lot to the knowledge the team has built up over decades, as well as the modelling and simulation capabilities which we continue to develop each year. My trackside role is a blend of fast paced data analysis, communication and decision making, working closely with the race engineers and drivers through the weekend to understand and improve the limitations often unique to each track. Outside of the weekend this is backed up by deeper data analysis and simulation looking at trends across the season and applying these to better prepare for the next event (often the next weekend!)My path to this point has been relatively broad, however I do find my stints in controls, aerodynamics, strategy and vehicle performance offer a broader overview of the car which can often be invaluable when trying to track down the dominant factor of the latest issue on hand.
