Oliver David (OD) Krieg is an expert in mass timber and industrialized manufacturing in the AEC industry, and holds a PhD in robotics and parametric design in timber construction. As Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Intelligent City in Vancouver, Canada, he is leading the development of their mass timber product platform for high-rise multi-family housing, combining building systems, manufacturing, and software development. As part of the company's effort to provide urban housing as a sustainable, affordable, and livable product solution, his work is characterized by a highly integrative approach towards engineering, design, manufacturing, and sustainability. Prior to joining Intelligent City, Oliver was a research associate and group leader at the Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD) at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. There, he led and participated in several international research and built projects that explore architectural potentials in timber construction. Working with wood as a natural but highly performative building material enabled novel potentials for exceedingly individualized and complex building elements and construction systems. In order to unlock this potential, an interdisciplinary and multi-faceted approach was followed. The resulting material systems and prototypes evaluated the structural and spatial possibilities, ultimately pushing the boundaries of today’s architectural design research.Oliver taught workshops at the University of Sydney, UBC Vancouver, and Tongji University Shanghai, and he has given lectures at several national and international conferences in architectural design and timber construction. He has taught seminars and studios at the University of Stuttgart in the context of his research. Between 2014 and 2017, Oliver was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation for his dissertation. His work has won many national and international awards and has been published in numerous magazines worldwide.In 2018, Oliver founded the design label and explorative platform odk.design to continue his research in the dynamic relationship between manufacturing technology and contemporary wood design.
