In 1994, I embarked on a pioneering journey by founding Venture Forth Excusrions, a venture that would later play a significant role in shaping the mountain guiding industry in South Africa. Joined by Walther Meyer in 1997, we established the ethos and spirit that continue to guide the company’s aspirations and developments to this day.Starting from humble beginnings, Walther and I lived a minimalist lifestyle, with everything we owned fitting into our backpacks. We were immersed in climbing and guiding daily, becoming probably the first two bona fide mountain guides in South Africa to earn a living solely from mountain guiding and climbing instruction.Venture Forth quickly gained recognition, becoming the first mountain guiding service to have brochures at the offices of Cape Town Tourism. We collaborated with several outdoor gear shops to market our innovative services, contributing to the infancy and growth of mountain guiding in the region.I pursued my passion for outdoor education by studying it in the UK, reinforcing the company’s strong belief in the transformative power of adventure. Walther and I were among the first individuals to receive instructor awards from the SA Mountaineering Development & Training Trust (MDT), positioning Venture Forth as the largest provider of MDT courses for several years.In 2006, I decided to explore the world and departed from Venture Forth and South Africa, leaving the business in the capable hands of Walther. Despite our separate paths, our friendship and communication remain intact.Venture Forth has since evolved, preferring to offer professional qualifications registered with SAQA, ensuring our students receive the legal qualifications they require, upheld by the transparent quality assurance provided by the SETAs we work through.Reflecting on this journey, I take pride in the lasting impact we made on adventure and outdoor education in South Africa, with the experiences continuing to shape my global endeavors.
