At James College Football Club I was the on field captain for the first team, which I managed to drive on to an unbeaten season in our first title win. This unbeaten season led us to our Varsity game where we were the first team from York for many years to beat Durhams best XI. In our 2nd season we won all but one game and managed to qualify for and participate in Roses, the biggest inter-university competition in Europe. I personally was awarded the University of the York ‘Sportsperson Of The Year’ due to my contributions on and off the pitch to this team. In our 2nd season I scored 23 goals which included 5 hat-tricks in a row. Whilst I am proud of my own achievements, more than anything I am proud of ensuring the other members of the team kept their standards raised to an absolute maximum and enjoyed every minute of football that we played. The culture we formed within the squad was truly special and it has taught me valuable lessons which I will surely be putting into use in my future career.

As Head coach I ran training sessions for 7 teams twice weekly, which consisted of around 150 members. During my tenure as head coach we had some of the most successful spells any of our teams have seen. Most notably (aside from the first team), the 7s team nearly gained promotion which previously was never a goal, as did the 3s team which would have seen 3 of our teams in the top flight for the first time ever. Our 2s team finished 2nd in the league behind the first team that I had captained. Aside from running the training sessions, I was required to ensure all equipment was prepared for each training session and match day. I also regularly checked inventory and ordered any new/replacement equipment if needed and went and made purchases myself when necessary. I believe these roles taught me many lessons that are truly essential to the career I will have in the future and I am proud to be a member. At York, the ‘college cup’ is a competition ran in the university that people anticipate all year long. Unfortunately this year the university decided to cut short the college cup and change the format, much to every sport members disappointment. As a result, alongside my exams I decided to run a cup competition myself inside the club. During this I had to promote the competition via social media, where I managed to gather 110+ members to enter this competition dubbed ‘JCFC super league’. I then, using a points based system, ranked each player corresponding to the team they were in (e.g. 1st = 1, 7s = 7) and created teams that all fell into the same range weighting using excel to ensure all teams were fairly selected. I then placed these members into team group chats and set up the tournament myself twice a week until the end of term. I was very proud of this achievement as I managed to get 75% in both exams I had whilst running this, and more importantly many of the members who participated informed me that this tournament was a well needed break from exam stress.
