Cri Fellow Cancer ImmunologyUniversity Of California, San Diego May 2008 - May 2013Greater San Diego AreaDuring this time I worked with Professor Ajit Varki, supported by a Cancer Research Institute (CRI) Fellowship in Cancer Immunology.Studied the role of a dietary derived sugar in tumorigenesis and progression. Described an experimental model whereby tumour growth can be stimulated or inhibited over a linear and narrow range of antibody dose (Pearce & Laubli et al, PNAS (2014), 111, 5998-6003). Discovered a Siglec dependent mechanism by which carcinomas suppress immune cell killing. (Laubli & Pearce et al, PNAS (2014)).In addition, I was also involved in setting up the chemical synthesis part of the labs research, which lead to several fruitful collaborations with colleagues within the lab and at other institutions around the world (Davies & Pearce, JBC, 2012; Bergfeld & Pearce, JBC, 2012; Buchlis et al, J Immunol, 2013). -
