Some time around 2011, when my friend and I would have been about ten, I was fumbling with a Sony Handycam outside on the driveway. The adults were inside. I almost dropped it, and to assuage any concern for our operation, I remarked that I almost dropped things all the time. He replied that he’d keep his things away from me.Spanning nearly ten years, I would put this camera to work filming zombie movies to raise field trip funding, repeated montages of radio controlled vehicles, cinematic vlogs of tramps and journeys into the wilderness, James Bond parodies, and a Lady Gaga music video. I guess that if you have to film, you have to film. I could have studied computer science or physics at UC but I was always coming back to film and cinematography. And I guess I was never quite doing what I was supposed to be doing, because in 2019 I decided I had to move. So almost ten years since our hearts skipped a beat on that driveway, I arrive at Victoria University to find nearly the same Sony Handycams handed to us in the practical film courses. We were before our time. I had already gotten a taste of a bigger screen - directing a national finalist 48Hours film in 2019, and by 2020 had released several campaign videos that propelled successful political candidates.In an alternate reality (perhaps still this lifetime), I’d have become a camera-op for a television series or worked as a production assistant for a media agency. It’s just that by the time I figured out how I might be able to achieve those things, it was already too late. Enter ROOZEN + SIBANDA.
