I was the Lead Engineer for the FlexESS 250 Energy Storage System, developing the design of a compact, energy dense solution for the DC-AC conversion and storage in "Soft-grid" and Off-grid applications. Based around a bi-directional, multi-port inverter I designed all engineering elements of the FlexESS from the ground up. It has been a steep learning curve but every iteration of the FlexESS improves in it's packaging and design detail. In designing the system i had to take cognisance of all areas of engineering (including aerodynamics!) to develop a fully harmonised product.Generally, my role at MSP Technologies required me to develop solutions to problems, based around the FlexESS system. Coming into MSP, I introduced the concept of a requirements-based engineering plan, drawing on my experience from BAE Systems, to develop products to a specific set of design criteria. I am also responsible for production of the engineering documentation, such as schematics and design descriptions, as well as producing technical proposals for any new systems, including layout diagrams. I am always seeking ways to improve the way that MSP improves it's engineering capabilities, which for a small company, we were continually improving.I have, to date; designed, installed, and commissioned on and off-grid Solar-Hybrid Inverter Systems; simplified the control system in a Sag Reduction Technology unit deployed in the D.R.C.; developed proposals for 500kW to 11MW grid stabilisation system using Ultracapacitors; to name a few examples.

Project Leader on the Dreadnought Programme in the Control and Instrumentation Team leading a team of Engineers to develop the detail design for the Hardware Elements of the Control and Instrumentation System. I also took on the role of representing the team at all programme design reviews reporting on any issues in the sub areas of the Submarine design.Key responsibilities were:Lead the team to deliver the design to programme.Develop team members skills and abilities.Keep track of key outputs and metrics, and allocate resource accordingly.Report to senior management.Work alongside project managers to report on progress.Day to day team management tasks - timesheets etc.Solve complex engineering challenges with the team.

After completing the DEG Scheme, I started working on the C&I Requirements set, in addition to my System design responsibilities. In this additonal role I was responsibly for developing a proper syntax to ensure that the requirements being entered into the DOORS toolset were consistent and uniform. This ultimately led to the requirements being rewritten and a more managed way of recording and capturing the requirements was the outcome. I eventually went on to lead a small team of experienced engineers to ensure that this was being done and led to furhter consideration for the full requirements set, and their traceability.Alongside my work on the C&I System Requirements, in my role as a C&I system owner, I was responsible for the C&I design of the following systems: Watermist Firefighting systems Weapons Stowage Compartment Firefighting and Weapon Cooling systemInstalled RADIAC SystemWaste Management SystemMy responsibilities were: to ensure delivery of Software design specifications to be fed into an Agile Engineering Capability, used for rapid prototyping and requirements V&V. to ensure delivery of the C&I Schematics and Cable diagrams of the systems I was responsible for.Interact with the System owner to support delivery of the full design, and provide input to the design as the C&I Engineer on the system.Key achievements:I developed the methodology for capturing requirements for the ships systems which simplified the capture process and removed duplication of requirements across the full requirements set. I also developed the way in which the requirements being derived bottom-up would tie-in to the higher level ships requirements. This required interaction with various internal stakeholders as well as MOD representatives.

Starting out on the Direct Entry Graduate Scheme, I was initially tasked with developing a software model which would be used to verify and validate requirements in accordance with the V-lifecycle using Siemens SIMIT software, in conjunction with Siemens Step7.Moving on to the Platform Systems team, I took on responsibility for the C&I design of the Watermist Firefighting systems and Installed RADIAC system. I was responsible for authoring Functional Design Specifications, Requirements elicitation with the Systems owners and development of the Schematics for the preliminary design phase.
