Sharing knowledge is a powerful way to change the world and reduce inequities. In 2018/19 I worked at the ECHO Institute at the University of New Mexico, a great team focusing on this opportunity. Project ECHO democratizes expert knowledge to change societal outcomes with an emphasis on the underserved, and strong engagements in health care, education and more. Now I am back in the world of cancer, working at the National Cancer Institute, on the development of a 21st-century workforce capable of advancing cancer research through a scientifically integrated approach.I had spent the first years of my career on my first passion, cancer research. I can remember wanting to be a biologist when I was 12. I studied biochemistry at Cambridge and then got my PhD in cell biology in London, and did post-doc training at the Salk Institute in La Jolla and at the Ludwig Institute's San Diego Branch. I focused on brain tumors and signal transduction. After stints on the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University and at Henry Ford Hospital, I joined MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2005. Using animal models, and genomics and protein analyses we did basic and translational research. In 2013 I closed my lab to focus on other opportunities. My second passion is building collaborative networks and helping the underserved. In 2010 I was selected to lead MD Anderson's Global Academic Programs where I managed academic relationships around the world on behalf of the institution and its faculty. I built out a very active academic network with 35 Sister Institutions, an annual conference with 800+ attendees and an annual grant program that has invested $24M in joint research. I initiated the center's first programs in Africa. My third passion is education, and in 2011 I was also appointed Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at MD Anderson, and worked to support the careers of our faculty and trainees. I oversaw a team of over 300 people organized into a dozen departments who delivered support for the more than 5,000 academic personnel and were the stewards of the education mission at MD Anderson. The best part of this job was the opportunity to help people achieve their goals.

ProfessorMd Anderson Cancer Center Sep 2009 - Jan 2018The academic research of my group encompasses basic and translational cancer biology, with focus on brain tumors. We work on signal transduction, primarily downstream of mutant EGF receptors, on the basic side. On the translational side we are interested in the mechanism of action and clinical potential of novel chemotherapeutics. In the last few years we have been developing a capability in proteomics to remain current with developments in biology, and this is driving our research into new and exciting areas. -
