Profile bio

About Oliver Mcleod

As a scientist, I have experience leading large research projects, building stakeholder relationships, public speaking, and scientific publishing. I am skilled at distilling complex scientific information into readily accessible outputs (non-technical reports, presentations, illustrations, visual media), tailored to the needs of stakeholders. I have produced a top-selling popular science book, several papers in international science journals, and my geological research is currently being developed into a museum exhibition in New Zealand.Over the last few years, I have begun working closely with tangata whenua (Māori communities) at the interface of science and Mātauranga Māori (inherited cultural knowledge). By working together in this space, we are creating better outcomes in environmental management that empower iwi and hapu as kaitiaki (guardians) of Aotearoa.

Listed skills include Igneous Petrology, Geochemistry, Field Work, Arcgis, and 6 others.

Scientist - Mātauranga Māori

I work at the interface of two distinct strands of environmental knowledge: Science and Mātauranga Māori. By weaving together both these sources of knowledge, we can better look after Te Taiao (the environment) and its wai (water), whenua (land), āhuarangi (climate) and koiora (life). My role is to connect and communicate the science of Waikato Regional Council to our iwi partners, so that they are empowered as kaitiaki to create holistic environmental change that spans across generations and upholds the mauri of the whenua.
