Gesundheit für Billstedt Horn is a management company set up by OptiMedis AG and the physician network of Billstedt-Horn to apply principles of population health improvement in a deprived borough of the city of Hamburg, Germany (https://gesundheit-bh.de/). I acted as interim CEO to ensure transfer of the grant-funded project to a sustainable funding basis through contributions from various health insurance companies starting in January 2020.

Following my 4 year tenure at LSHTM from 2011 to 2015 I was honored with the appointment to Honorary Senior Lecturer. My research interests remain broadly within the theme of evaluating health system performance, in particular of hospital systems and integrated health care systems. I am curious to learn about, develop and apply methodological approaches that are relevant to improving performance and population health.

I joined LSHTM as a Lecturer in 2011 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2014. I implemented projects to assess and improve hospital performance, to evaluate the effectiveness of quality improvement efforts in hospitals and to assess and implement strategies to improve patient-centred care. My work involved designing data systems for the prospective collection of clinical process and outcome data, audits to assess organisational characteristics of trusts and networks, database linkage and the statistical analysis of large-scale data bases to inform clinical decision-making and evidence-based health care management.Projects I led include research on developing a new patient safety indicator on 'avoidable severe harm' for the NHS Outcomes Framework and the National Clinical Audits, notably the National Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Audit. I previously co-led the EU DG research funded project to assess the impact of quality improvement systems in European hospitals on patient level outcomes (www.duque.eu). I also held key roles in the EU DG Research funded projects handover.eu and marquis.be.In terms of teaching, I was the organizer for the Proposal Development module (jointly with Professor Jan van der Meulen) and seminar leader in the Health Services module (with Professor Nick Black). In addition, I led seminars for the research methods courses run by the Clinical Effectiveness Unit, Royal College of Surgeons.

The International Journal for Quality in Health Care (IJQHC) is a leading international peer-reviewed scholarly journal addressing research, policy, and implementation related to the quality of health care and health outcomes for populations and patients worldwide. I joined the journal as Deputy Editor in December 2014 for a four year tenure.

I was responsible for research and development, specifically, scaling up existing activities, developing and implementing new integrated care systems and attracting research funding for their evaluation. After January 2017 I joined the board of the company.

I held the position of Director of Research and Education at the Avedis Donabedian Research Institute, Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain, where I was responsible for research coordination and innovation in teaching. I collaborated in two large scale EU studies on the quality and safety of care ('Methods of Assessing Response to Quality Improvement Strategies (MARQUiS)' and 'Handovers at the interface at primary and secondary care (HANDOVER)'). As Co-IP of the 'Deepening our Understanding of Quality Improvement in Health Care (DUQuE)' Project I secured 3 million € of research funding from the EC.I was also responsible for the coordination of the Master Programme "Methods to Evaluate and Improve the Quality of Health Care" at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. This included curricula design, tutorship and teaching in the programme.

I was the Programme Manager for Quality of Health Systems & Services at the WHO Regional Office for Europe. In this function I led the implementation of projects on hospital performance assessment and health promotion in hospitals in WHO EURO Member States.I also liaised with high level officials the implementation of WHO bilateral collaborative projects in the area of health services improvement in WHO Member States in the EU, Caucasus and Central Asia.

I coordinated the International Network of Health Promoting Hospitals, prepared research briefs and methodological papers on Integrated Health Care Delivery.

I worked on a multi-centre study to assess variations in resource use and outcomes of stroke services in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.
