Dr Oliver Groene is Vice Chairman of the Board at OptiMedis AG, a population health improvement company pursuing the Triple Aim. He also served as interim CEO applying population health improvement principles in a deprived borough of the city of Hamburg. "My main area of expertise is in designing and implementing large scale systems to monitor health care quality and identifying systems and interventions that improve population health. I am curious to learn about, develop and apply methodological approaches that are relevant to improving performance and population health – with a the focus not simply on studying these issues but applying the best available scientific methods and evidence to make a significant change to the people and populations we serve."Under his leadership, multiple case and implementation studies on population health management have been conducted, in collaboration with WHO, the World Bank, and others. He holds an Msc and PhD in Public Health (LSHTM/UPF), DEA in Health Services Research and MA in medical sociology and organizational sciences and has been trained in health services research, quality improvement and biostatistics at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Harvard School of Public Health and the Joint Commission (H-Index=45). He is Professor at the Faculty of Management, Economics and Society at the University of Witten/Herdecke. He has worked nationally and internationally with high level decision makers and consults international stakeholders on quality of care issues.

I implemented projects to assess and improve hospital performance, to evaluate the effectiveness of quality improvement efforts in hospitals and to assess and implement strategies to improve patient-centred care. My work involved designing data systems for the prospective collection of clinical process and outcome data, audits to assess organisational characteristics of trusts and networks, database linkage and the statistical analysis of large-scale data bases to inform clinical decision-making and evidence-based health care management.Projects I led include research on developing a new patient safety indicator on 'avoidable severe harm' for the NHS Outcomes Framework and the National Clinical Audits, notably the National Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Audit. I previously co-led the EU DG research funded project to assess the impact of quality improvement systems in European hospitals on patient level outcomes (www.duque.eu). I also held key roles in the EU DG Research funded projects handover.eu and marquis.be.In terms of teaching, I was the organizer for the Proposal Development module (jointly with Professor Jan van der Meulen) and seminar leader in the Health Services module (with Professor Nick Black). In addition, I led seminars for the research methods courses run by the Clinical Effectiveness Unit, Royal College of Surgeons. -
