Each year the University of Canterbury Motorsport team, UCM, competes in the Australasian Formula SAE competition. Formula SAE is the world’s largest university engineering competition where students design, manufacture, test and then race a single-seater, open-wheeled, formula-style race car. Formula SAE challenges teams in all aspects of engineering including: design, manufacturing, testing, marketing, management and business. I joined the UCM team in 2015 and was involved in the aerodynamics team for three years. 2015 saw UCM place third in the Australasian competition with a combustion vehicle, an exceptional result for only a third year team. 2016 saw UCM produce and compete with New Zealand's first 4WD electric car, in 2016 UCM became the first team to win an Australasian event with an electric car. In 2017 I became the lead aerodynamic engineer and worked with the team to build on the success of the past few years with the goal of outright winning the Australasian competition. As the lead aerodynamics engineer I managed the UCM aerodynamics team and worked to design, manufacture and test the aerodynamics package. ANSYS Computational Fluid Dynamics was used to design the front wing, rear wing and side pods as well as analyse and optimize several of the cars sub-assemblies such as the cooling system and chassis. Aerodynamic components were manufactured using carbon fiber composites.
