As a component of my practical placement to fulfil the requirements of my Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics degree, I spent 5 weeks of my clinical placement at Prince of Wales Hospital. During my time there I worked in the outpatient and inpatient setting in a diverse range of clinical areas including ICU, renal, oncology, spinal acute and rehab and aged care acute and rehab. Consequently I was faced with patients of varying age groups and with a cross-section of medical issues ranging from patients who were clinically stable to those with multiple complex issues, which had to be considered. I developed my skills:- Using CBORD and EMR to order and amend diets and supplements- Managing my own patient load- Calculating estimated requirements and estimated intake using quantitative measures - Using evidence based guidelines to provide appropriate recommendations depending on disease state and patient’s clinical status- Working as part of a team both within the dietetics department but also with other health professionals- Prioritising nutritional issues in complex cases- Communicating with patients and their families to provide education in an effective and informative manner- Providing appropriate interventions including oral and enteral nutrition where indicated- Liaising with other health professionals through participation in ward rounds, case conferences and white board meetings

Fairfield

As a component of my practical placement to fulfil the requirements of my Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics, I spent 5 weeks clinical placement at Fairfield Hospital. During my time at Fairfield hospital I worked in the outpatient and inpatient setting across all the hospital wards, primarily dealing with diabetes (T1DM, T2DM, GDM) and patients requiring healthy eating education. I developed my skills in:- Providing patients with education on the dietary management of diabetes- Facilitating small group education sessions in the outpatient setting- Assessing patients screened as at risk of malnutrition and providing appropriate intervention where required- Organising HEN - Working as part of a team within the dietetics department- Using interpreters to communicate effectively with patients of non English speaking backgrounds- Considering patient’s social and ethnic background when determining nutrition interventions/recommendations

North Strathfield

As a component of my practical placement to fulfil the requirements of my Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics degree, I spent 5 weeks in an industry placement at Campbell Arnott's. During my time at Campbell Arnott’s I worked on a number of projects advocating for the role of nutrition in a large food manufacturing company and looking at ways of promoting health and nutrition to the public. I developed my skills in:- Providing consumer friendly nutrition advice to promote public health through the Arnott’s and Campbell’s websites- Comparing and reviewing nutritional information for Arnott’s Campbell’s products versus competitors for the purpose of nutritionally conscious future product development- Developing presentations to be used in meetings with key stakeholders- Liaising with stakeholders in the public health domain One of my major achievements at Arnott’s was developing a presentation, which is being used as part of a three year initiative aimed at increasing the intake of vegetables in the Australian population.

During my time at Cooper Street Clinic I worked for Professor Kerryn Phelps, the principal of this clinic, and Amber O’Brien, the practice manager. My main responsibilities included:• Communicating with patients and healthcare professionals• Record keeping, billing and receiving and processing paymentsI was required to carry out these tasks in an ethical and confidential manner to protect patient privacy.
