About Olivia Brock
I am a passionate learner who likes to combine interdisciplinary skills to make information as accessible as possible. Using my background in mathematics, art history, and teaching, I aspire to make complex ideas interesting, comprehendible, and exciting for large audiences. I have spent hundreds of hours in museums as an employee, intern, and patron, and I love the informal educational environment that museums foster. In my career, I aspire to take the concept of informal and accessible education and apply it to helping researchers, organizations, and museums communicate their important work as effectively as possible, whether that be about history, art, science, or any other subject. As a long-time writing tutor, I understand the best ways to communicate ideas with clarity and ease. And having spent several semesters as a mathematics tutor and recitation leader, I have experience taking complex technical ideas and making them easy to understand by my students.I am also an experienced statistical programer with skills in R, SAS, Tableau, and Python. I enjoy the challenges of data analytics and like to combine my statistical and coding background with my communication skills to help make statistics and data exciting and approachable for non-statisticians. I hope to one day help a company strengthen the effectiveness of their data analytics with strong visual and verbal communication.A problem solver at heart, I spend a lot of time building jigsaw puzzles, solving sudokus or crosswords, and completing Rubik’s cubes. In my more formal educational endeavors, I enjoy solving the difficult problems of communication and coming up with the most effective ways to portray ideas in both writing, speech, and image. My art history background has made me value the communicative power of visuals, and I hope to take that into my career as a communicator.Along with my interest in informal education, I am also passionate about school and formal centers of learning. I love spending time in the classroom and helping students understand difficult topics (even if they don’t think they’ll ever use them again in their life). I hope to one day spend time in a classroom as a teacher and getting to understand the nuances of teaching students effectively that I can one day take into a career as an educational researcher. Whether I end up in a museum, high school, or university, I want to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds with the power of learning to help develop intelligent, high-thinking, and curious members of society.
