• Honors in the major thesis research project: This project focuses on textile fiber analysis using birefringence and the Michel-Levy chart with Dr. Matthieu Baudelet, Ph.D. The beginning of my research looks into how to determine birefringence using color. When a light is shined under a fiber at 45 degrees under a microscope, an array of colors shows on the fibers as the thickness changes. These colors can be then matched to the color chart called “The Michel-levy chart.” This chart shows all the colors at different wavelengths, distance between two peaks of a wave, and their matching birefringence line. Similar to what programs like Photoshop do, the red, green, and blue colors produced on the unknown fibers at 45 degrees will be matched to the color chart. I will use the data for those three points to determine the best match on the chart, which would give me an estimated birefringence. I then hope to be able to analyze the cross-section, a surface or shape that is or would be exposed by making a straight cut through something, especially at right angles to an axis, to confirm that the colors created match that of the determine values from the fiber by itself. The final goal is to take the data collected from the values of RGB, the birefringence, and the cross-section to 3D reconstruct the unknown fiber and compare it to the known fiber for accuracy.
