About Olivia Happel
I received my Bachelor of Arts from Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in December 2023. I completed a major in Policy Studies, a major in Environment, Sustainability, & Policy, and a minor in Geography. I spent my time at Syracuse University intersecting my passions for research, resource sustainability, and public service. I have developed great interest in policies related to waste management and diversion, composting, food security, urban planning, environmental communication, and sustainability management. My purpose in this world is to influence the adoption of circular economic practices and policies. I truly believe in the value of waste, and this serves as the foundation of my environmental ethics. Various research positions throughout my undergraduate career have equipped me to approach policy issues in an interdisciplinary fashion. I am a deeply curious and motivated researcher trained to perform data and policy analyses, manage independent and team research projects, and communicate through written technical reports and memorandums. I enjoy collecting, processing, and graphing data as much as I enjoy performing literature reviews and communicating written findings to clients and communities. I love to approach issues 'spatially' as I have gained technical experience in 2D and 3D mapping on ArcGIS Pro software. Overall, my research experiences and environmental coursework at Syracuse University have crafted me into an analyst who is eager to investigate systems and solve problems through comparative analysis. I was fortunate to study corporate sustainability in London, England during the Summer 2022 semester. I also studied and worked in Washington, D.C. during the Spring 2023 semester. These experiences broadened my perspective of how sustainability policies are written, influenced, and implemented in both corporate, national, and international policy settings. I aim to refine my expertise in circular economy in my early career, to then serve in a public works role in government, planning and implementing sustainability programs.
