I have taught others how to create their own journal and discussed the common pitfalls that lead people to give up their practice. I designed this workshop to help others find a way to make their journals work for them.

At SJU's Writing Center, I gained the skills and capabilities to aid others in defining their needs for individual pieces of writing, as well as establishing long-term goals for improvement, focusing structure, flow, content, voice, grammar, citations, etc. I tutored students of various disciplines at both the graduate and undergraduate level, many of whom were ESL students, or those whose first language wasn't English. Students frequented the center at every stage of the writing… Show more At SJU's Writing Center, I gained the skills and capabilities to aid others in defining their needs for individual pieces of writing, as well as establishing long-term goals for improvement, focusing structure, flow, content, voice, grammar, citations, etc. I tutored students of various disciplines at both the graduate and undergraduate level, many of whom were ESL students, or those whose first language wasn't English. Students frequented the center at every stage of the writing process—pre-writing and brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and revising. Rather than provide a quick edit, it was essential to me that the writer understood every suggestion or correction I made, thoroughly discussing whatever detail or grammatical concept that was at play. I always stressed two points: that the writer maintain autonomy over their own work and that, while I do my best to catch every mistake or weak point, my overall goal goes beyond that of a single paper—it is to help one grow to be a skillful, confident writer. Working at the University's Communications office, I became familiar with AP Style, as well as the basics of writing press releases and feature articles. In writing for the University, I enhanced my research and interview skills. I worked closely with the writing staff, benefiting from the collaborative office-environment and gaining experience with all forms of communications, branding, and web-based content created.

This internship proved extremely valuable for gaining fluency in HTML basics, WordPress, and navigating blogging as a small business in the age of social media.
