I specialize in turning academic and technical jargon/research into clear and easy to understand news stories for a general audience. I’m currently working as a communications specialist (writer/editor) for Chickasaw Nation Industries as a government contractor for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Population Health. I'm also the public information officer for Haddam Volunteer Fire Company and a part-time writer for the University of Connecticut's College of Engineering. Prior to this, I was the campus news editor at Wesleyan University where I spearheaded a news website and electronic newsletter, and generated the lion's share of the content. Before working in higher ed, I was a reporter and photographer at two newspapers which instilled a deadline-driven mentality in all my work. My areas of expertise include:• Crafting messages for various platforms (print, social media, email, website content)• Interviewing subjects and writing news articles, feature stories, and press releases• Translating academic and technical information into easy-to-understand concepts• Copy editing and rewriting for clarity while adhering to specific style guides (AP Style)• Posting stylized content online or in electronic formats (e-newsletters, websites, blogs, image-rich emails)• Working with the public (public relations), the media, and making media placements (media relations)• Creating e-mail marketing campaigns and constantly striving to increase open and click-through rates• Generating analytic reports to help develop and shape future content• Event photography and digital image editing (color balancing, resizing, blemish removal, etc.)In addition, I received a Cardinal Achievement Award in 2017 and 2021 for "exemplary service to the institution" at Wesleyan University and a 10-years-of-service pin at Haddam Volunteer Fire Company 2023.
