Environmental Health And Safety Intern

Mattawan, Michigan, United States

During my internship with Charles River Laboratories, I developed an ergonomic risk-assessment and elimination tool specifically designed for departments experiencing high rates of musculoskeletal discomfort. By collaborating with department supervisors across the site, as well as fellow employees in the Environmental, Health Safety, and Sustainability (EHS&S) department, I was able to develop an Excel-based tool that fit the needs of the site, while also gaining a greater understanding of safety assessment as a whole. During my time in this role, I also streamlined the process of completing employee ergonomic evaluations.

Necropsy & Bioanalytical Chemistry Intern

Ashland, Ohio

As an intern in Charles River Laboratory's Necropsy Department, I had a number of responsibilities. Before I was able to dig into the day to day activities, I first had to get “up to speed” on the site’s Standard Operating Procedures. Other responsibilities included: completing prep work which allowed studies to run more efficiently, change out stock solutions, and even begin some dissections of stock rats within just a few weeks. After the Necropsy department, I had the opportunity to work in the Bioanalytical Chemistry department where I calibrated pipettes, made solutions, and pulled stock samples in order to aid the general functionality of the group. I performed many sample extractions, which successfully ran through mass spectrometers. I also had the opportunity to work alongside the method development team, which developed protocols for fellow chemists. During my time at Charles River Laboratories, I had to maintain data integrity and was even able to speak briefly to a few members of the FDA regarding the lab procedure I was performing during a site inspection.
