For over a year I was the support officer for SOVA across North Yorkshire based within six HLNY probation offices. The project mentored male offenders for up to 12 weeks, who were on probation, or who were due to be released from custody. The role included stakeholder engagement, attending regular meetings with heads of departments, and giving presentations to probation offices, and officers to gain referrals. The role included building up many relationships across the sector, within the probation service, police, and prisons. To improve the service, I continued to build relationships with fellow charities, drug and alcohol services, council housing officers, and food bank employees. I also recruited, interviewed, trained, and managed volunteers for the mentoring position across North Yorkshire, whilst balancing a higher risk caseload of my own. At the highest, my case load reached 78 service users, with 60 volunteers across the area. I taught and operated on a lone working policy for the majority of work, with no SOVA other SOVA colleagues in the county. Volunteer recruitment for the project lead me to giving presentations in universities, and speaking at local library event evenings. During my role as Support officer, I regularly attended safeguarding training, training for training volunteers, volunteer management, and assessment training, alongside using databases such as Criis, Ndelius and Volreg.

This current research assistant position is with PhD student Robert Blakely from Oxford University at the Science museum in London, in their ‘science live’ exhibition. This involves asking visitors of the museum to take part in the Psychology experiment looking at the effects of Neuroscience on criminal responsibility, collecting and analysing the data, with the results to then to be published within a journal once completed.

This job was acquired for weekend work during my A-Level studies, however after one year, I progressed to weekend supervisor, and then for sixth months a full time supervisor after my studies had finished. This promotion shows my reliability and the trust in responsibility from my peers. A supervisor role took organisation, leadership, and the responsibility of working with the money and security of the shop at the end of each working day.
