Olmo Zavala-Romero Email and Phone Number
I am an Assistant Professor at the Department of Scientific Computing at Florida State University, currently working on Machine Learning algorithms to improve Data Assimilation in Ocean Models as well as for the prediction of subsurface fields from satellite data. Other areas of research are Geographic Information Systems on the web for the visualization of scientific data. Previously I worked as an Assistant Scientist at the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Miami working on Deep Learning algorithms for the automatic detection of prostate cancer from multi-parametric MRI images and genomic data.Additionally, I was an assistant professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), in the Center for Atmospheric Sciences from 2016 to 2018. At that time I thought Programming and Analysis of Geophysical Data and worked on multiple projects, most of them available http://pronosticos.unam.mx/ During my Ph.D., I worked on the segmentation of breast lesions from Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI scans. I focused my research on improving the performance of well-known level set methods by doing parallel programming in the GPU using OpenCL and OpenGL (for visualization). For my first master's in 2007, I worked in the classification of land use using satellite images and machine learning. We proposed a semi-supervised algorithm, based on Naive-Bayes, that uses the expected probability of the predicted classes to generate new labeled examples. These newly classified examples are used to re-train the classifier and improve its performance. I believe you need to love the work you do to be happy, and at the same time, there are many important things in this world beside work. Find a balance in life.

Data ScientistRisk Management Solutions Mar 2016 - Aug 2016Tallahassee, Florida AreaThe short time that I was at RMS I helped redesigning the current PostgreSQL database, making visualizations of geospatial data, reorganizing the version control system (SVN and Git), establishing a work flow for the generation of code and documentation of new software, and optimizing some existing code. -
Research AssistantCenter For Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies Dec 2010 - Dec 2015Tallahassee, Florida AreaI worked at COAPS during my Ph.D. as a Research Assistant, as part of the Deep-C Consortium. During that period of time, I started the OWGIS project, an open source software that creates WebGIS sites for the visualization of scientific data. I was also part of the data management team were I helped with the design and maintainance of the storage database for the whole Consortium. -
Ph. D. In Computational ScienceFlorida State University Aug 2009 - Dec 2015I graduated from my PhD on Fall 2015. My thesis title is "Breast lesion segmentation using a three-dimensional Active Contours Without Edges approach with a GPGPU implementation." I worked with DCE-MRI images of the breast, focusing in lesion segmentation using level sets. The proposed algorithms were accelerated using OpenCL.I was a Research Assistant at the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (https://coaps.fsu.edu/) were I developed the open source software OWGIS (owgis.org) which allows visualizing scientific data on the web using Web Geographic Information Systems (Web GIS) technologies. One example of the web sites generated with OWGIS is http://viewer.coaps.fsu.edu/DeepCProject/mapviewer. -
