All geological data is compiled to determine whether the target formation angle is changing, and bit target is adjusted accordingly and relayed to directional drilling team members, which in oil field terminology is known as geosteering. Geosteering is very important to the process of horizontal drilling in the Middle Bakken formation in the Williston Basin because the Middle Bakken formation thickness from the top of formation to the bottom of formation generally ranges from ~35' to 45' of True Vertical Depth (TVD). The TVD target window that the bit is usually geosteered within has only a 10' range. This window is known as the pay zone, and the pay zone is generally located close to the center of the horizontal Middle Bakken formation. The most important reason that geosteering is a necessity for drilling in the horizontal Middle Bakken formation is because the Middle Bakken has hydrocarbon rich, soft, black layers of shale above and below the formation, know as the Upper and Lower Bakken Shales. These hydrocarbon rich shales are what make the Middle Bakken formation a tremendous pay zone for oil, but these two layers of shale are also dangerous to drill into. If either of these two layers are encountered while drilling in the Middle Bakken, all efforts are made to slide out of them (sliding is process used to steer the bit in different direction), but if sliding fails, a sidetrack wellbore needs to be performed. A sidetrack is a new wellbore drilled somewhere along the path of the original wellbore which is costly to perform, and this is why geosteering is so important.
