Music instructor, Omar Bernal, graduated from San Diego State University (SDSU) in 2017 with a Bachelor of Art in Music and a minor in Spanish. Omar has extensive experience in performing, having performed in two masterclasses for Dr. Thomas Viloteau in 2016 and Dr. Lily Afshar in 2017. Additionally, Omar has performed with Mariachi Garibaldi from Southwestern College (2013 – 2015), the Southwestern College Guitar Ensemble (2013 – 2015), and the SDSU Guitar Ensemble (2015 – 2017) on numerous occasions in a four-year period.Omar has experience in musical theater, having performed as part of the SDSU University Chorus during their run of Jesus Christ Superstar in 2016.Upon graduation, Omar began hosting private guitar lessons, for both beginner and advanced level students, as well as piano and ukulele lessons for beginners. In 2018, Omar was hired by the La Maestra Foundation (LMF) as the Generations Center for Youth Advancement’s resident Music Instructor. There he has been able to instruct youth, ages 6 to 18, in music theory, music history, guitar technique, piano technique, and basic ukulele technique. Additional lessons include music notation, where students learn to read and write music, music composition, and aural skills training. The Generations department later expanded to include adult and advanced level music classes for anyone over the age of 18. All classes are taught using with an extensive musical repertoire that is engaging and entertaining for students of any age. Within months of working for LMF, Omar was hired to rebuild Oak Park Elementary School’s Guitar Ensemble. Omar singlehandedly restructured and built the curriculum for two levels of guitar classes (4th and 5th grade), after several years of the program’s hiatus. Students practice and participate in lessons twice a week to prepare for exams and showcases.During the COVID-19 pandemic, Omar worked in conjunction with the La Maestra Community Health Centers, La Maestra Foundation, Feeding San Diego, and the San Diego Food Bank to provide social services to Central San Diego. Together they were able to distribute meals, diapers, and safe transportation to thousands of residents who were in need of support during unprecedented times.
