Many leadership lessons I have learned over my twenty years in the Army, none more poignant than this: People will bend over backwards for a leader that invests in them. Once I invested in my Soldiers, treating them like human beings instead of a number, I received so much more return on my investment. The people you lead want to know that you are genuine and that you care. I did not 'dance with wolves', nor would I want to be thrown to them either. I don't want it and I would not do that to anyone I supervise. Mentorship is a greater requirement of one’s time and energy, but the dividends it pays, are compounded. An organization's culture is dictated from the top down. If it wants to remain relevant, mentorship has to be a priority. The military is not perfect, by any means, but one thing it has ironed out crisp, is mentorship.
