I stumbled onto the world of coding through the most unlikely of gateways, tropical fruits and knitting. As a botanist I discovered a new plant species in the mangosteen family, and needed a way to store and compare data of all the different species of plants I collected from Mexico to Borneo, and taught myself how to use R. As a knitter, I was excited to get my first knitting machine. But to my dismay I found out to get the machine to work I needed a 600 dollar knitting software. Thats when coding saved my life (and wallet) when I stumbled upon a GitHub repository of coders who hacked their knitting machine using JavaScript in rebellion against 600 dollar softwares. Since then my passion and respect for coding grew immensely and I have not stopped learning.
