My name is Omar Shams and I am third-year pharmacy student at the University of Florida. I have been working in pharmacy since the beginning of 2021 in the retail setting. I helped process and administer COVID vaccines during its rollout and through working and helping patients , I have grown an appreciation for the pharmacist profession. I an driven by the opportunity to help people as one of the most accessible health professions.While I was working as a pharmacy technician through my first 5 months, I was also working as a medical assistant at Dermatology Associates in Sarasota. Being able to work from both sides was a valuable experience as I was able to see where the struggles and miscommunication arise between the pharmacist side and the prescriber side. Working in both of these roles forced me to learn how to communicate properly and efficiently to prescribers, pharmacists, patients, and insurance companies all alike. I chose pharmacy because I valued being someone accessible to people. Throughout the past 3 years, I have helped many patients with their OTC needs when they come in concerned about an ailment. I have helped many patients receive cheaper, alternative medications when they could not afford ones prescribed to them. I enjoy being a problem-solver and finding solutions to whatever problem is troubling a patient. I stive to continue to have that same impact throughout my professional journey and am committed to promoting and providing patient-centered care.
