About Om Taropawala

Hi! I'm Om, a rising Brown University sophomore and Jack Kent Cooke College Scholar with a passion for helping others through medicine and biological science. My previous experience in medicine has been largely research-centered, with involvement in wet and dry lab protocols and research writing within neuroscience, oncology, and public health. I intend to pursue a masters degree in public health and an MD while also contributing to the Rhode Island community (and health advancement as a whole) through volunteer work and continued involvement in research. With regard to non-medicinal pursuits, I have experience in math tutoring, startup creation, photography, and music performance.     I joined the Bailey Lab in the summer of 2024 as an undergraduate researcher interested in the metagenomics aspect of the laboratory. As of current, I have collected data with the aim of optimizing selective genome amplification of DNA from Plasmodium vivax and C. diff samples for sequencing through Oxford Nanopore Technologies. The ultimate goal is to develop a protocol allowing for accessible genome analysis of clinical samples in areas affected by malaria and C. diff. Techniques in analysis I have learned from the lab include use of Qubit and qPCR assays, basecalling, demultiplexing, variant calling, and genome mapping.
