McMorran Lab, in conjunction with Portland State University Aerospace ProgramResearch and development of magnetic devices for orientation control of satellites.• Worked as the main liaison to Portland State University on 3 magnetorquers, preventing incompatibilities between systems and advising on satellite specifications to allow maximum performance of the devices through collaboration between engineering teams.• Designed and tested new magnetic control devices for small satellites by writing python programs, Fusion 360, and magnetic probes for atmospheric and geological research, decreasing costs by 10% and increasing satellite longevity by removing the need for propellant-based systems.• Developed manufacturing techniques using a coil winder with new soldering practices and material research (wire gauge diameter and core material), resulting in 50% decreased build time and increased magnetic dipole moment of the magnetorquer due to optimized core materials with permalloy and annealing processes.• Published a poster and gave an oral presentation on magnetorquers at the 2020 NASA Space Consortium to 180+ attendees, showcasing the cost-effectiveness and increased longevity of our devices for 2U cube satellites.
