Engages in extensive public speaking and community outreach to translate research findings to aid those affected by addiction.Dr. Onawa LaBelle is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Windsor, where she directs the Positive Psychology Recovery and Relationships Laboratory. Holding a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, her research integrates her lived experience with addiction and recovery with academic expertise, focusing on an array of topics that are critical for improving the quality of life for folks who are in recovery from alcohol and substance use disorders. Dr. LaBelle’s work is at the forefront of examining the intersections of positive psychology with recovery from addiction. Some of her recent projects include exploring Buddhist approaches to recovery, online recovery meetings during COVID-19, and examining women’s relationship experiences in early recovery.Dr. LaBelle is dedicated to advancing understanding and treatments for substance use disorders, making significant contributions through her research, teaching, and public engagement. She welcomes opportunities to collaborate with peers and communities interested in positive psychology and recovery sciences.In addition to her role at the University of Windsor, Dr. LaBelle serves as a Collaborating Scientist at the Homewood Research Institute, as a Steering Committee Member at the Peer Recovery Center of Excellence, and is a Trusted Advisor at the She Recovers Foundation. She also coaches early career faculty through the Faculty Success Program in her role as a Small Group Coach at the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity.
