Regularly produced data-driven interactive graphics for the web. Designed and developed the longform template for “Stolen Future,” the paper’s six-part series on Alzheimer’s and dementia, which won third place in the National Headliner Awards. Awarded a $5000 grant from ONA and was one of 16 fellows chosen as part of their inaugural journalism mentorship collaborative. Served as the front-end developer and project manager for two EPPY Award-winning projects: the investigative feature “Breaking Faith” and documentary “Knights of D-Day,” which was also a finalist for a Canadian Association of Journalists award. Developed an audience engagement strategy, web-first workflow and provided multimedia training to staff. Managed the site‘s homepage and web presence across several social media accounts.

Toronto, Ontario

Built a news summarization app using the New York Times’ “Most Popular” API in JavaScript, an open-source jQuery plugin for longform content and an election tracker. Projects included responsive design, cross-browser testing, wireframing and pair coding.

Worked with the mobile and tablet teams to produce content for the paper‘s apps. Garnered nearly 400,000 page views as one of the paper’s most read reporters during the summer four-platform redesign. Covered one federal and two provincial elections.

Contributed to several A1 pieces, wrote about the Rob Ford crack cocaine scandal, and covered breaking news for the paper’s metro section. Monitored police scanners, wires, Twitter, wrote SEO-optimized headlines and tagged stories with keywords.

Frequently published in the A-Section during the three-month $19 million civil case between the City of Guelph and Urbacon at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

Worked with the managing editor and manager of digital initiatives to test bugs, fix errors and help launch the iPhone and iPad editions of the magazine using Mag+, which was downloaded roughly 15,000 times in the first two months.

Fact checked twelve pieces, including two features that hoisted gold and silver at the National Magazine Awards as well as a 6,000-word cover story by Pulitzer Prize-winner Chris Hedges. Assisted senior editor Rachel Giese in editing a story on the Canadian adoption market. Wrote three briefs and took workshops on magazine theory, story development and copy editing.
