How & from whom did you learn about Leadership? And similarly, how & from whom did you learn about creating & maintaining Highly Productive Teams? Most of us never learn an official 'model.' We soak up what we can from our early role models, and then from whatever media we consume. So we end up with a patchwork quilt or homegrown composite. As an engineer, I used to be fascinated by how things work, and how you make things. Now, I want to know everything I can about how People work. And how you make leaders and teams. Having mental models in these areas is crucial unless we are content to swing around in the dark, hoping. Far too many people "wing it" in these crucial domains, creating huge amount of suffering and lost potential around them. The research is clear that we perform our best when we build a great team around us, and enroll skilled and caring (but still challenging) leaders at the helm. When these are in sync, organizations create the highest levels of engagement, retention, productivity and innovation. I've co-created teams like this to win national championships in sport, transform profoundly on weekend retreats, and excel in day to day work. If you want to achieve your best - first figure out clearly what "good" looks like, then calibrate yourself to that with a measurable baseline. From there, you will have a clear path forward outlining along what dimensions you need to develop. Knowing your Talents & Strengths is part of the equation, so to share mine, here are my top 10 Strengths: Ideation, Empathy, Achiever, WOO, Learner, Restorative, Positivity, Relator, Strategic, ConnectednessIn early 2018, I completed certification for the Emotional Intelligence EQI2.0 assessment, attended in person training in ITC; in 2020 got fully certified in the Leadership Circle Profile 360 assessment and attended the Growth Edge Coaching and became a certified Squadify Pro for teamwork; in 2023 I trained in the Transformational Paradigm Shift model. Let me know if you want to experience any of these frameworks and I'd be happy to connect. As Kegan & Lahey said in their landmark work, The Immunity to Change, "In the world of L&D, there's been too much focus on L, and not enough on D [Development]" Let's do more transformation and less transmission. Filling up someone's cup isn't the same as expanding the volume it's capable of holding.Jung had a similar idea when he said "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate."It's time to take the reins and become the leader of your own life.
Dynamic Leader Development

PrincipalDynamic Leader Development Jun 2013 - PresentSan Francisco Bay AreaAt www.dynamicleaderdev.com, we believe that leadership is both a burden and a privilege, and that leaders can be developed no matter their starting point. The difficult truth these days is that the world is moving so quickly and becoming increasingly VUCA, and as a result most leaders are promoted before they are ready and are in over their heads. We support leaders to increase their self and systems awareness, expand their skillsets as well as their mental complexity, and thereby up-level their capacity to lead. Leadership is not a spectator sport, and as Roosevelt said we need to ‘get in the arena’ with our teams and do the hard work of development alongside them. Over the past 20 years Dynamic Leader Development has co-created high performing teams to win national championships in sport, transform profoundly on intense weekend retreats, and excel in fast growing start-ups. -

Director Of SalesPax Water Technologies Nov 2009 - Mar 2014San Francisco Bay AreaNational (and international) Director of Sales for PAX Water Technologies. * As one of the founding employees (and also as Director of Sales), I played a significant role in the company's Leadership team guiding overall company strategy and direction from 2010 to 2014. * Direct responsibility to manage performance for sales representatives in each state, including hiring, managing, training and firing (as needed) a nationwide fleet of ~40 representatives. * Hired and directed an internal team as we grew from total headcount of 0 to 35 employees. * Generated and assessed sales strategies to continue rapid growth of a breakthrough technology in a slow-growth, established industry (drinking water). * Reinforced a strong, recognizable brand by speaking at scores of conferences every year and leveraging our strong reputation to launch new products in successive years.* Proud that our team won the "People's Choice" award for Best New Product on the market in 2009. -
Sales & Marketing (Promotional Speaker)Pax Water Technologies Jan 2007 - Mar 2014San Francisco Bay Area* Crafted technical talks that appealed to mixed audiences of consulting engineers, regulators, and water operators, and spread the message of a breakthrough technology in a very slow-moving and cautious drinking water industry* Educated and gently guided customers into a new way of managing their water supply using a sustainable, biomimicry-based technology that has a very low carbon footprint and is extremely energy efficient. Introducing biomimicry for the first time requires a nuanced technical presentation that is part teaching, part eye-opening, and part sales. * Impart knowledge and education about our product in a non-salesy and professional manner, which is a fine line to tread. Fortunately we had several other gifted speakers on our small team, so we all collaborated to create the most powerful messages.* Internally, I was the cultural historian and culture keeper - keeping the founder's vision strong in this extremely successfull spin-off -
Design EngineerPax Water Technologies Jan 2005 - Jan 2007San Francisco Bay Area* Co-led the design of a prototype for a new technology in water circulation: including sourcing vendors, complying with specifications for drinking water materials, and efficient mechanical design.* Led the installation, testing, data collection and analysis of our prototype technology in a series of live field tests. Formed and nurtured the partnerships and relationships needed to install the prototype and keep these early-stage tests going until the data picture was complete. Not the easiest task to prototype technology in drinking water!* Authored case studies and technical specification sheets describing the initial product and product successes. Eventually my proficiency in this area and my desire to learn and grow led me to transition from engineering to a sales and marketing role. * Proud that this design went on to win the "People's Choice" award for Best New Product in the drinking water industry at the national tradeshow in 2009. -
Design EngineerPax Scientific Mar 2003 - Jan 2005San Rafael, Ca* Design Engineer creating and improving designs of fans, pumps and propellers, including a patent for a unique and powerful computer-cooling fan design that doubled as an effective marine propeller. * Axial and centrifugal fan engineering design, prototyping and testing, and overall translation of founder's nature-inspired vision into engineering & product reality in a variety of turbo-machinery fields. * Responsible for program management and hiring/HR decisions to select and hire original engineering team. -
Research Fellow - Energy EfficiencyRocky Mountain Institute Jan 2003 - Mar 2003Boulder, CoDuring my time at RMI, I also put in a short stint with the Energy Resources team, working on an energy strategy for San Francisco on how to diversify their energy generation and efficiency investments. This exposed me to many of the available technologies (fuel cells, solar, wind, etc) and further encouraged my life-long desire to save energy & improve efficiency wherever I can. -
Research Fellow - Green BuildingRocky Mountain Institute Jun 2002 - Jan 2003Old Snowmass, CoWorked primarily with the Green Building team, where my focus was on Biomimciry and Biophilia (mimicking life's designs and strategies and then love of life, respectively) and how we could improve our built environments. After all, if we are building modern zoo's with "natural" habitats to keep the animals comfortable, perhaps we should build modern buildings for humans in such a way they're more comfortable, more productive, and generally happier. Go RMI!
