As a key contractor to Timberline Corporate, I was on the road more than I’d wanted to be. After 15 years, I was ready for a change. That’s what led me to the position of Director of Custom Reports and Information Delivery. As the Director, I used my Timberline expertise to help clients, but without having to board a plane first. My team and I quickly built one of the Group’s most successful departments, and we were regularly enlisted to help other departments with their projects. Although my time here was brief, it was a welcome opportunity to enjoy more time with family while still creating technology-driven solutions for clients and colleagues.

When the opportunity came to work as Controller/CFO for one of the Drury companies, I decided to sell my CPA firm and take up the challenge. As Controller/CFO, my wide-ranging duties included:● Managing multiple accounting departments using Timberline software● Overseeing cash and investments● Performing monthly closings and financial statements for 2 holding companies and more than 10 subsidiaries in the areas of general contracting, construction management, subcontracting, investment, hospitality, and real estate holding and development● Analyzing and interpreting financial results for company owners.When I first started in this new position, I learned Timberline GOLD Version 1.0, and 3 years later I became a Timberline Certified Consultant and Trainer. As a key contractor for Timberline Corporate, I advocated for Timberline’s industry-leading software solutions. Companies in construction and related industries needed to get more out of the data at their fingertips, and we had the technology to make that possible.I was endorsed directly by the Timberline Software Corporation and tasked with providing professional consulting services not only for large, national direct accounts at Timberline, but also for client resolution cases, Timberline’s business partners, and other Timberline Certified Consultants and Trainers. I was also contracted as a support rep in Timberline’s call center, and I provided quality-assurance testing for new modules and helped the education department develop materials. For 18 years, I was frequently featured as a speaker at various Timberline conferences or regional meetings, including the Timberline Consultants’ Conference, Timberline’s Customer Conference, and the Timberline User Group (TUG).

After graduating with a degree in accounting, I’d worked as a CPA at various tax and information-technology firms that served construction companies and professional-service providers and their organizations such as doctors groups. But soon, I realized that I preferred to be in business for myself. When I opened my own CPA firm, I approached it as a business owner rather than as a CPA. Drawing on my interests and experience, the firm focused on the construction industry. In addition to providing traditional auditing and tax services and overseeing our clients’ information systems, we also offered VAR products and consulting services for MAS 90 and Great Plains software. Soon, we were at capacity, and I added a partner, growing the firm to a 10-person team to keep up with our clients’ needs.It was during this time that I realized just how much the output of information systems had been holding construction companies back. As a business owner, myself, it was hard to overlook the opportunities that my clients had missed simply because they couldn’t get the right data at the right time. These insights have shaped my career-long focus on using the latest technology to give my clients better access to more data.
