Focusing on realizing solutions to this grave issue, to the best of my ability within the confines of a public school lab, I've investigated the antibiotic effects of essential oils on bacteria. Lemongrass essential oil was compared with a mixture of two of its derivatives in their effects on gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Chamomile essential oil has also been investigated along with one of its derivatives as well. Results show that promising antibiotics can be derived from lemongrass and chamomile to assist in creating medicinal diversity and combatting ABR infections. In addition, results have demonstrated promise in their potential to be synthesized into chemotherapies due to their anti-neoplastic properties.Presented at science fairs and conferences for three years, this research received regional and state recognition and awards in the Microbiology category for its ingenuity and overcoming of public school lab limitations.
