The gastrointestinal tract contains a large complex of diverse microorganisms ranging from 300 to 1000 varying species. This microbial complex has been implicated in a multitude of roles that are vital for maintaining a healthy and balanced equilibrium within GI tract. Such roles of these microbes include the fermentation of polysaccharides, development and maintenance of our immune system and the regulation of gut motility. Our gastrointestinal microbiota have also been speculated to aid in neurological development and for having a role in regulating our mood and behaviour. Dysbiosis and alterations to the natural flora of the gastrointestinal tract have been known to lead to gastrointestinal dysfunction leading to disorders such as irritable and inflammatory bowel disorders. Community analysis allows us to investigate the entire microbial community present in the gastrointestinal tract (through the collect of fecal samples from mice) giving us an overview how the communities change in response to the selected pressure. By looking deeper at the communities we can determine exactly what microbes are causing these possible changes to the overall communities structure.

I am passionate about my teaching as it allows for me to project my skills and knowledge on to those who I teach and I receive joy from seeing students enjoy and succeed in their learning. Molecular, Human Genetics (2014-2017): Ecological Genetics and Evolution (2014-2017): These subjects take a more advanced look at both the molecular techniques involved in genetic practices and at the evolutionary side of genetics. Both subject also use statistics in their analyses and teach good experimental techniques and practice.Animals, Plants and Microbial Life (2016-2017): This subject introduces students to the general principles of living organisms and how structures have evolved for survival within animals, plants and microorganisms.

BIO2POS - Practice of Science. This subject acts as a bridge between all science subjects in university, introducing the students to good experimental design, whilst allowing them to plan and design their own experiments. As a tutor for this subject I work alone with a class of students working through various experimental design scenarios and teaching them the importance of correctly designing an experiment to include the relevant controls and replicates.
