In my doctoral research I study the connections between the long-term microbial community dynamics and nitrous oxide emissions of biological nitrogen removal processes at wastewater treatment plants. The project aims at promoting the application of molecular analyses and microbial community monitoring in wastewater treatment process operation and control.

I conducted my master's thesis work in the Water and Environmental Engineering research group. In my thesis I studied microbial communities functioning in the nitrogen removal process as well as their links to nitrous oxide emissions at wastewater treatment plants. My duties also included assisting on a master's degree course in Biological treatment of.

During this industrial placement at Krüger A/S, I assessed the microbial community structures in Danish wastewater treatment plants and evaluated the feasibility of implementing microbial community knowledge in the operation and control of wastewater treatment plants.

During my visit at DTU Sustain, I performed bioinformatic analyses on shotgun metagenomic sequencing data. The aim was to understand the metabolic potential of the activated sludge microbiome in a wastewater treatment plant, with a special focus on the nitrogen removal process.

I studied the implementation as well as hydrological and environmental impacts of nature-based solutions in Finnish agricultural drainage projects, in the Water Management and Governance research group at the Freshwater Centre.
