Cross reference assessment of existing master specifications and engineering procedure deliverables as aligned to realistic requirements and capabilities of BAS installations. Revise or create master specifications and engineering procedures with the goal of reduced cost, improved records and documentation and consistent look and feel of systems throughout the campus.Contributed in creating virtual workstations operating on terminal services client allowing wireless enterprise wide access to environmental and operational data used extensively by facilities services, reliability engineering and EH&S teams.

Install a series of wireless campus wide monitoring data accumulators with main system transmitters placed in seven prominent locations and an addition seven key repeaters to be able to support monitoring of individual environmental parameters of lab research equipment throughout the fifty-eight building campus.

Evaluate and redesign existing Computer Room Air Condition (CRAC) Unit systems to use free cooling mode with outside air exchangers and automated baffling systems. Add wireless environmental monitoring systems (upwards of 700 points) to be able to pattern heat profiles in 17,000 sq. ft. server room. Use heat pattern profiles, along with Hot Aisle / Cold Aisle air containment to alter operating efficiency points of CRAC units.

Provided Building Automation Systems oversight on engineering design and installation and conducted commissioning testing for an extensive system upgrade on an operational laboratory research facility. This project included specifics on LEL (Low Explosive Level) laboratory gasses monitoring, fire alarm activated shut trip breakers as well as migration of Siemens Building Technologies control units to the new model controllers allowing for improvements of building control communications and greater reliability of life/safety systems in the event of power loss or communication loss events.

Part of a core team to develop fail-safe radioactive isotope containment and exhaust systems in an R&D environment. Interaction with electrical design and controls, status monitoring and alarm annunciation and notification. Enhances researcher safety while conducting experiments with radioactive isotopes within a Biotech setting.

I was responsible for the capital projects Research & Development automation scope for a stealth Research Support Facility project in the Central Valley region, California. I represented Corporate Automation Engineering as part of a cross-functional team to ensure the successful implementation of this very large support project.The scope of this project includes detailed automation specifications, Acceptance Testing (Factory and Site) and oversight on facility Installation & Commissioning procedure for Laboratory support equipment including Autoclaves, rack & tunnel washers, drag line conveyors, six-axis robotic material handling, solid material and liquid dispensers, waste disposal units, cold rooms, emergency back up generator and glass washers.I also provided oversight on the Building Automation System interfaces.

I am representing Genentech Corporate Automation Engineering on the retrofit and commissioning of the South San Francisco former Cell Genesys Building retrofit and commissioning.My duties are documentary and functional oversight, testing, installation confirmation and acceptance of all automation systems and automation system cross platform communication and reporting connections.This includes the Building Automation System, HVAC system, laboratory equipment, utility systems and emergency power systems.

Consulting to the Genentech Corporate Automation Engineering group.I am supporting a GMP compliant laboratory suite developed to support small molecule scale up R&D automation. This project includes several chemistry hoods suites serviced with GMP qualified temperature control units providing heat transfer fluid utilities with wide temperature ranges (-80C to 150C) with precise tolerances and utility supply pressures for use with glass laboratory equipment.I am directly and completely involved in all aspects of the project from Project Management and Scheduling, HMI design, PLC automation development, authoring GMP test protocols and test forms, coordinating Functional Performance Testing, review and approval of P&ID design and implementation. I am also working directly with the end user to improve functionality through continuous process improvement and provide operational support during the initial start-up phase.

I was responsible for the Genentech capital R&D automation scope within a South SF Campus Laboratory Support Building. I represented Corporate Automation Engineering ensuring equipment builders, suppliers and general contractors were able to achieve success in meeting Genentech automation requirements in a consistent, predictable manner. This scope included FAT, Installation & Commissioning, and SAT of a full range of Laboratory support equipment including Autoclaves, rack & tunnel washers, drag line conveyors, solid material and liquid dispensers, waste disposal units, cold rooms, and glass washers.I was also directly involved with the Building Automation System interfaces to existing Genentech South San Francisco facilities and standards.I coordinated the final documentary turnover, ensuring that all documents met the submission requirements and routed the materials to the appropriate distribution and final storage archival entries.

Coordination of medical device stealth mode start up company in the preparation and submission of design control documentation falling under 21CFR820 guideline culminating in full FDA approval submission package March 2007.After the conclusion of my participation, approval was successful as Class III device. All manufacturing outsourced after transfer of intellectual properties. No further participation anticipated at this time.

The group consisted of a manufacturing eng, controls eng, two biochemists, process chemist and QA technician.Tasks included the validation of laboratory and production equipment, the establishment of manufacturing and laboratory procedures as well as the scaling up of a very manual manufacturing process. The scale up was done by the development of proof-of-concept/proof-of-principal equipment that was put to use in a semi-automatic manufacturing environment as well as providing a platform of design genealogy not exceeding one order of magnitude - that is to say that if 100 parts per minute was the desired automatic throughput, then the POC/POP unit requires a minimum of 10 PPM throughput.I was also directly involved with the product design, materials testing and compatibility, vendor sourcing and approval, as well as significant research on potential automation and technology solutions for the manufacturing and process requirements.

As the Senior Controls Engineer with the FreeStyle™ Process Engineering department I supported the expansion of the high volume production lines producing the FreeStyle™ blood glucose test strips.I was directly involved with the equipment specification, vendor qualification, FAT, SAT, installation, IQ, OQ, PQ and transfer to Manufacturing all process equipment. My work was heavily controls automation based as all software for all incoming machines was modified to ensure machine networking and intercommunication. Additionally the programs were streamlined and improved to the point of total production line yields in the 96%+ range and uptimes in the 92%+ range.I also heavily participated in R&D tool and machine design and building including electrical, controls and mechanical components. I was also involved extensively with Design Controls, documentation controls, validation, risk assessment, project management and qualification responsibilities.

Contracted to TheraSense for 18 months and was then hired on as full time permanent employee.

Automation Technologies is a small efficient consulting company specializing in Allen-Bradley control system upgrades and Distributed Control Systems for a variety of continuous and converting industries. Specific OEM applications including the automation upgrades to corrugation equipment and corrugated converting equipment. Continuous monitoring of all corrugation systems including adhesive (starch) temperature and flow, glue dam position and auto order change, cross-web temperature of liner and medium at the single-facer, cross-web temperature of liner in the double-backer hotbeds, monitoring of cut length, stack count, auto order change, and high speed web splicing. I donated my half of this company to my partner and friend when the opportunity arose to relocate to California, as I had grown very tired of winters in Calgary.

This included additional conversion of the corrugator thermal controls, dust extraction/bailer applications, smart loading dock doors, forklift intersection safety improvements. Additionally I had the opportunity to visit other plants and bring some of the technological improvements to other maintenance departments.

The National Research Council of Canada's Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics (NRC-HIA) manages Canada's involvement in major astronomical observatories, thereby ensuring Canadian astronomers full access to world-class facilities spanning the entire sky.Attached to the Astronomy Technology Research Group (Victoria) I supported a team of leading research scientists by building and installing prototype control boards and also as part of a modernization effort on the 48" optical telescope control system.Mostly I was just in daily awe by the level of intelligence and ability of those I was surrounded with. Honestly, the vast majority of what was done here I failed to understand but what little did stick was put to good use in the expansion of my career as a motion control and automation expert. Basically my job was eliminated due to election day promises. The memories continue however as I believe this was the most fun place that I have ever worked.
