  • Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf
    Development Intern
Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf Sep 2013 - Dec 2013
    Burlington, Vermont
My experience working at the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf was one of the most rewarding and enriching internship experiences thus far in my life. I absolutely loved working within the Burlington community through the lens of the Food Shelf and thrived meeting new people and making new connections to help plan major fundraising events. Throughout my time interning at the Food Shelf, I networked and exercised savvy social media skills to orchestrate the donation of raffle prizes for various fundraising events, including a large event in collaboration with Phish’s Waterwheel Foundation, which ultimately raised over $10,000 for the food shelf. Furthermore, I contributed to the smooth and successful production of multiple food drives, several fundraisers, and events such as the Vermont Grocer's Expo. While also working independently to obtain dozens of sponsors and raffle prizes, I also worked hard to support the Development Manager and the rest of the Food Shelf Staff in their endeavors.
  • Conservation Law Foundation
Community Organizer/Policy Research Intern With The Food And Farm Initiative
Conservation Law Foundation Sep 2013 - Dec 2013
    Burlington, Vermont Area
As the Community Organizer/Policy Research Intern with the Food and Farm Initiative of the Conservation Law Foundation (CLF), I was able to personally connect to and help improve local agricultural politics in Burlington. I got to see first-hand the strides being made by various passionate community members and organizations to change the City's laws regarding urban agriculture. It was moving and illuminating to become a part of such a team and actively participate in re-writing City of Burlington ordinance. With CLF and members of the Burlington Food Council, I engaged in policy discussions with city officials and various agricultural experts in their respective fields to determine what should be included in the new ordinance. I became a member of the Burlington Board of Health (BOH) Livestock Husbandry Working Group and ultimately prepared a concise report of the process by which the BOH Urban Livestock Husbandry Working Group arrived at its policy recommendations. I compiled research on various urban agricultural outreach materials used by other cities across the country who either have done, or are looking to do, the same thing that the Burlington Food Council and CLF are doing in Burlington, VT-- change policy to allow for greater urban food production and increased food security for its citizens.
