My name is Luc Opdebeeck born in Belgium, 1960. Since 1989 my focus has been on Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) and developed expert jokering/directing skills. I was trained by all the major international experts and colleagues on TO, including several trainings by Augusto Boal, founder of TO.As co-founder of Formaat, Workplace for Participatory Drama, I have been working as artistic director since 1999. Under my supervision, dozens of major and minor productions were launched on issues like racism, bullying, emancipation, crime prevention, alcohol and drug abuse, ethical dilemmas, community conflicts and minority rights.I have trained people in TO and other Participatory Drama techniques in the Netherlands since the early 1990s. Internationally I have worked as a trainer and practitioner in South Africa, Spain, Croatia, Serbia, Moldova, Belgium, Laos, India, Mozambique, Suriname, Palestine, Lebanon, Turkey & Iran.

The company started as Theatre of the Oppressed group doing Forum Theatre in schools. Soon I extended my work beyond the field of education, and beyond Forum Theatre as the only available technique. In 2004, the extension "Workplace for Participatory Drama" was added. We decided to do that to emphasize two things. First, we want to be a place where working with the oppressed comes first. A place also where new techniques are developed and passed on. Second, we wanted to draw attention to the term “participatory”. Participation involves the voice of the participants. It is not the educational value of the drama techniques that stands out. Education is often coercive and based on monologues. Participatory Drama is democratic and based on dialogue.

Artistic DirectorStichting 'T Wicht 1989 - 1996In 1987 richtte een aantal enthousiaste mensen op basis van het Theater van de Onderdrukten van Augusto Boal, Stichting 't Wicht op. Na een aantal producties over pesten kwam ’t Wicht in 1990 met de productie “Koffie met wat lekkers” over seksuele intimidatie op de werkplek. Het was het regiedebuut van Luc Opdebeeck, die vanaf dat moment artistiek leider van 't Wicht was.In de periode 1991-1996 ontstonden aan de lopende band nieuwe producties, o.a. over de positie van vrouwen op het werk, over racisme, opnieuw over pesten en over de rechten van patiënten in ziekenhuizen. 't Wicht maakte daarnaast ook repertoiretoneel en won enige festivals. Er werd gewerkt op de grens van kunst & cultuur en educatie.
