For almost twenty-nine years, I have had the pleasure of working with, and supporting a number of art dealers trading in various genres of art.Over those three decades, I have learned that accounting for the sale of a work of art is not always straightforward. Perhaps a piece is owned in shares by more than dealer. The original purchase was in Euros, the sale in US dollars and the client has to account in Sterling. Maybe one of the owners hasn’t paid for their share, and any applicable VAT must be accounted for too. The solution is to present all of the relevant data in tabular format, clearly showing the progression through purchase, sale, and distribution.
