Oran Goral is a Researcher and Designer at Institute for Brain, Cognition & Technology. He is proficient in Hebrew and English. When starting this project, we had a very specific problem we wanted to tackle - we wanted to take a better look at why users churn after their 1st session and how we can craft a better landing experience for them in our platform. Right off the start they both seemed super engaged and involved in the project, working hard to understand the scope of the problem and how we should approach it. We dedicated the first couple of weeks to learn about the company’s services and interviewing employees on what they saw as problematic, and from there started writing an interview script for these specific types of users we try to cater to. The interview included two tasks on 2 different platforms and was designed to spot the differences between how users perceive our free product and our paying platform, and to surface usability, orientation, discoverability and understandability issues. Chen and Oran got up to speed on the first week - using our platform like a pro, seeing user sessions and finding potential problems in our offering experience. Our first swing at it was facilitating a “user experience day” when all the product managers, designers and engineers were sitting down and watching sessions from the platform, identifying problems, bugs and frustrated user experiences. The part we thought was going to be the hardest - recruiting these specific users that haven’t seen the product yet and could give us a glimpse into their first session - was a breeze for them - it took them just 2 days to recruit 10 users, from which they interviewed 7. They interviewed these users in the following weeks and did it brilliantly, showing them the platforms and coding their answers and surfacing the core issues they discovered. It was a pleasure to see them at work - teaching me research methodologies from their degree and summarizing everything into a digestible deck they showed to product stakeholders. Overall I enjoyed working with them very much, their work helped us focus our efforts on what matters to our users and created so much awareness around UX in the company, and I would happily recommend any company that wants to expand its own UX research dept. to team up with them.
