I've had the distinct pleasure of fostering startups on both coasts, from humble, single-server beginnings into fully "enterprise-ready" designs. Add to that a wonderful stint integrating an ISP into a Telco enterprise, and directing the TechOps team for the sixth largest website in the world, and I've seen it all - little networks, big networks, and helped to change one into the other. For more than two decades, I've been managing both people and systems, in a hands-on, directly-involved manner - I've had a hand in every technology I've deployed, be it the very first server for a startup, or enterprise gear taking part in a trillion-events-a-day network. And I firmly believe in apprenticing those that work for me to create the sort of network and systems administrators I want to see in the world today. While I live and breathe infrastructure, I've also worked closely with Engineering at every turn - in many ways fostering the idea of "devops" before it was trendy - the idea of your operations team as a partner in everything engineering produces, and an environment where work can be done, but production can remain secure, stable, and functional.
