Orit Shaer is a Professor and co-Chair of Computer Science at Wellesley College. She founded and directs the Wellesley College Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Lab. Her research focuses on novel human-AI interaction for the future of work and learning. She also investigates advanced human-computer interaction styles including tangible and embodied interaction and mixed-reality interfaces. Dr. Shaer is a co-author of a new ACM book titled “Weaving Fire into Form: Aspirations for Tangible and Embodied Interaction”. She is a Senior Member of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), and a recipient of several NSF and industry awards including the prestigious NSF CAREER Award. Professor Shaer’s leadership positions at Wellesley College include serving as Chair of the Computer Science Department and previously a co-director of the Media Arts and Sciences program. She is a co-director of an NSF funded International Research Experiences for Students in Germany. She is a co-founder and steering committee co-chair of the CHIWork conference, which focuses on understanding how human-computer interaction will support work in the future. She is the steering committee chair of the ACM conference on Tangible Embedded and Embodied Interaction (TEI) and served as its Program Chair in 2020, 2017.
