External Verifier

In this role, I am responsible for externally verifying student achievement and provider grading for an Access to HE Diploma or Subject. This requires an interim and final moderation for each academic year, which can take place in the center or remotely. Working in small centre specific teams, I am able to communicate my concerns to my team, and listen to theirs, to inform our judgements about the necessity for a wider investigation. This information is fed back to my lead, to the centre staff through a ‘challenging friend’ discussion and formalized in a report. Experience of challenging discussions in this role, where centre staff have underperformed through delivery, grading or feedback, has helped me to develop the confidence and tenacity to thoroughly explore these issues. While these conversations have been challenging in some cases, they have forced me to explore methods of tackling these conversations that ultimately provide a higher quality learning experience for students. Involvement in this team has allowed me to foster excellent relations with staff at other centres and work with staff teams to identify development opportunities and requirements, as well as offering support in overcoming obstacles that I have experienced or observed. Reports must be precise and reliable, recognising good practice as well as areas for improvement in any centre.

Lecturer Of Law

In my teaching career, I have qualified in Education in the Life Long Learning Sector as well as gained specialist qualifications in numeracy in teaching, in addition to my QTLS (legal equivalent to QTS and recognized in the state schools).Diversity in delivery has allowed me the opportunity to explore a range of subjects including History, Criminology, Business, and Sociology all to level 3, in both long and short courses. The cornerstone of my pedagogical practice has however always been Law, for which I currently deliver a range of units on the Access to Higher Education Course for the Business and the Policing pathways as well as the HNC Level 4 / HND Level 5 in Pubic Services. That said, almost half of my teaching is on the AQA A Level Law Programme, straddling both the AS and the A-Level, although this will be moving to OCR in the coming academic year. To support students I provide regular additional revision sessions, extracurricular activities such as a weekly debate club, as well as active engagement with local opportunities to promote employability in the community. It has been my pleasure to take students to the European Parliament in Brussels and Strasbourg respectively.
